Parameters of Hex Nuts
Hex nuts are defined by several key parameters that ensure compatibility with mating fasteners (bolts, screws, or studs) and suitability for specific applications. These parameters are standardized across metric and imperial systems.
Thread Parameters
Metric: Expressed as "M" followed by diameter (e.g., M5, M10, where "M5" indicates a 5mm nominal diameter).
Imperial: Expressed in inches (e.g., 1/4", 3/8").
Dimensional Parameters
Width Across Flats (WAF): The distance between two opposite flat sides of the hexagon. This determines the size of the wrench or socket required for installation/removal (e.g., an M8 metric nut usually has a WAF of 13mm).
Material Grade: Indicates strength and performance (e.g., metric steel nuts: 8.8, 10.9; imperial: Grade 2, Grade 5). Higher grades withstand greater tensile and shear forces.
